Cracked What?

So the furnace began acting up a few day ago, and stopped giving us wonderful, soothing heat. At first we just put it off, figuring warm weather was just around the corner. But, then it got colder, so we said to hell with this, and called the repair guy.

The furnace is pretty new, just installed in '95, so I was thinking the problem was nothing major: a bad thermostat, a sensor on the fritz, or something else low impact that would wind up costing a hundred bucks and we'd go back to our not so chilly business.

I know nothing about furnaces, the guy could have told me it needs a kidney transplant and I wouldn't know the difference, but the words "Cracked Heat Exchanger" sound ominous. Indeed it is, as apparently that is a fatal condition for gas furnaces.

We get to be cold for a little bit longer while things get sorted out, but at least it's not the dead of winter.

Update 4/10 @ 11:40 am:

Tomorrow morning the furnace will be replaced, so our time of cold is coming to an end. Even the cat was cold this morning, so we're glad that this is almost done with.

You are damned lucky as I'm sure you must know since this could fill your house with carbon monoxide (do you have a carbon monoxide detector?) and it may be why you have not been feeling all that well sometimes.

No, we don't have a CM detector, but I think we'll get one after this.

It's not blowing anything back into the house, (and hasn't been for a week now), as it is not blowing anything at all. It has a safety catch that shuts the fan off when this sort of thing happens.

HOLY HELL

I am so glad you aren't dead.

Have you gotten a CM detector yet? Want one for your birthday?

guess I will have to chime in with the 'glad you are still alive' party...

I'll throw in a few bucks for a CM detector if you need CK, DK or Xithor! Hell, I have one in my basement in the package, want me to send it to you?

Hope it gets warm out and you & Sadiemac stay warm in the house!

Good luck!

Well Bubblewench, if you already have one, I won't stop you from sending it.

How goes the wait for the repairman today? Did they get it all fixed yet?
